Not all orthodontic bite problems are equal. Like no two people are ever exactly the same, tooth and bite issues tend to differ for each individual.

Years ago, you may have heard that Invisalign doesn’t work for overbites, or a dental professional may have told you that Invisalign can’t fix your bite. While this may have been true back then, after 20 years of research and over six million patients successfully treated, Invisalign is now a proven overbite treatment option for many orthodontic patients.

Invisalign for Younger Patient Overbites

Invisalign Mandibular Advancement Appliances are a special piece of equipment used for overbite correction in growing children who are under the age of 13. They are aligner trays that come with plastic wings attached to them. The wings force and teach correct posture to the lower jaw of a growing child in small, consistent increments. Younger Invisalign patients need slow and consistent tray changes for effective treatment.

Treating Older Overbite Patients with Invisalign

Once a patient finishes growing (typically after age 12 or 13), mandibular advancement appliances aren’t reliable in correcting an overbite. However, other techniques can be used.

One involves wearing elastics along with Invisalign aligners. These elastics are nearly the same as the elastics worn with braces. They gradually move the bottom teeth forward while moving the top teeth back, working slowly to correct the patient’s overbite completely.

How Long Does it Take to Fix Overbite with Invisalign?

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Every dental patient’s treatment plan is unique according to the complexity of their overbite, compliance, and the orthodontist’s individual treatment approach. However, most patients can expect that Invisalign will take anywhere between six months to three years to fix an overbite.

Invisalign Treatment Requires Self-Discipline

As opposed to traditional metal braces, Invisalign treatment offers much freedom and convenience. The downside to this type of treatment is that you must be patient and self-disciplined.

Within every 24-hour period, you have only two hours to leave your aligners out of your mouth. If you don’t wear them at least 22 hours every day or forget to put them on, they won’t be as effective, typically leading to longer treatment times.

Invisalign treatment also requires patients to ensure they are keeping up with required brushing, flossing, and other necessary oral hygiene tasks as recommended by their orthodontist.
