How Porcelain Veneers Can Improve Your Smile

Scott Cosmetic Dentistry

It’s impossible to thumb through any celebrity weekly while standing in line at the grocery store without being greeted by page after page of perfect smiles. Are they born with it? Well, sometimes people do just happen to luck into that kind of smile thanks to genetics, but in many cases, it’s veneers and not genes. There are a lot of misconceptions about veneers floating around on the internet (we most certainly do not grind your teeth down to tiny nubs first!), but here are the facts about how porcelain veneers can improve your smile.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain carefully crafted to match your natural teeth in both color and size. We use a special material to bond them onto your existing teeth to correct size, shape, and color. Some of the reasons why patients choose to get veneers include:

  • Yellow, gray, or stained teeth
  • Teeth that have been worn down by grinding
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are shaped irregularly or are noticeably uneven
  • Chipped teeth

What Is the Process to Get Veneers?

At your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your treatment goals and whether porcelain veneers are the best way to achieve them. Our team will take imaging and impressions so we can create a 3D model of your mouth to help our lab fabricate custom veneers for you.

The next step in the process is placing temporary veneers. The purpose of these is to help you decide if you like what they look like or if you want to make any adjustments before your permanent veneers are placed. In order to secure these temporary veneers, we need to shave a small amount of enamel from your teeth, then we adhere the veneers.

When you’re ready to have your permanent veneers placed, we first clean your teeth thoroughly and etch them to allow the porcelain veneer to attach securely. We apply dental cement to your teeth and then carefully position the veneers onto them. Using a special ultraviolet light, we cure the cement, then remove any excess. After this, the process is complete and you can enjoy your new smile.

What Is the Cost of Porcelain Veneers?

Every case is different, so the only way we can provide you with an accurate estimate is if we see you in person to assess your unique needs. If cost is a concern, our billing staff can go over financing options with you.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

Porcelain veneers are not a permanent solution, but they do last quite a while with regular maintenance and good oral hygiene practices. You can expect them to have a 15 to 20 year lifespan, provided that you come in twice a year for dental cleanings and exams, brush two minutes twice a day, and floss at least once a day.

Are There Alternatives to Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are not the right solution for everyone. Some alternatives to veneers include teeth whitening, Invisalign, dental bonding, teeth shaping, and gum contouring.
